#StandUpFightBack: White Supremacists Have Started Recruiting in My Community

Today, as I walked a street I’ve walked a thousand times before — a street leading to the houses of my friends & of their families, a street that passes schools & parks, that’s strewn with the petals of dogwood & cherry each Spring — as I walked this street, I paused to read the poster someone had fixed on the splintery surface of a telephone pole. This is the part when everything changes. From now on, this little, residential, Oregonian street beneath my feet is no longer only a ribbon of asphalt or just a street that I played in when I was a kid, the one that had dogwood trees — now, it is also a street I will have to fight for.

“Protect the Family
Reject Degeneracy”

White Nationalists in Oregon, the "American Vanguard" White SupremacistsThat’s what the poster says. Its big, black letters were emblazoned over a stylized, black-&-white image of a woman & a man together, their faces half-shadowed — and an address: american-vanguard.org. I stood beneath a sky that was ready to snow, and, for a few minutes, I became that millennial guy on the side of a road, whose face is buried in their  mobile device. There it was, front & center, on the homepage — the silhouette of an eagle carrying a bundle of rods & an axe, a pre-Roman symbol I’d written about last week, called a fasces. Below it were the words:

We hear it every day: “Whiteness” is evil, and must be destroyed. Our religion, our traditions, and our identity are dragged through the mud by the globalist establishment while millions of nonwhites flood our nation every year. If current trends continue, White Americans will be a minority by 2044. It’s time to take a stand.

And in another part of the American Vanguard’s website:

We fight for America, but this can never happen unless we win the hearts and minds of our fellow White youth.  We want to be at the forefront of the reawakening of White racial consciousness. In order to do this, we must be willing to fight.

White Nationalism Must Be Smashed
With White Rationalism!

Update, 2/2/17: Fixed it 🙂

As someone who spends a lot of time researching current events & writing about them, it seems clear to me that the recent political & cultural upheavals in the United States have energized & emboldened the most racist elements of its society. From reactionary attempts to silence the movement for Black lives to the anti-immigrant, white nationalist ideology of the alt-right, racism has been claiming a more visible role on the national stage — but, just as a nation is made of communities that are made of individuals, racism takes root in individuals who take root in our communities.

When was the last time you walked around your community? Have you checked the nearby telephone poles lately? Maybe you should. Before today, I had never seen or heard of militant white supremacists trying to recruit people in this part of the Pacific NorthWest — the left coast, we call it — but times are changing. After today — well, I know that I’m planning on taking a lot more walks from now on and I think I’ll start carrying around a few posters of my own….

In solidarity,
John Laurits

P.S. I’ve just obtained digital copies of the American Vanguard’s arsenal of propaganda posters and I intend to spend these next days turning their hate into useful, loving, welcoming art/counter-propaganda, which will soon be posted in the NewsReal for anyone to use for free…

I don’t know if you grew up here, John, or how your youth affects your experience of our area, but the Pacific Northwest has had a large racist faction since we white people invaded. When my grandmother was born black people weren’t allowed in Oregon, she grew up afraid of seeing the local Native Americans on the horizon because there was still open hostility between the settlers and the Natives. I’m lucky, my grandmother was able to grow out of that and didn’t pass those fears on. Maybe she learned better through contact with so many different people when she moved to Seattle as a young woman to… Read more »

Bigotry is learned and synonymous with ignorant. I have traveled the world, far east, middle east, europe, alaska, and in my 23 years of traveling in the military I have NEVER seen a black, yellow, red or white person. Thousands of shades of brown from light tan to dark brown, every person walked upright and when I saw it bled red. I have a large and diverse family with all the so called races (there is only human) with the exception of Native American and middle eastern. With 10 great granddaughters I have many chances to fill in those slots. I am extremely proud of my family, and… Read more »

In God we trust. But even God gave the archangels weapons to fight violence.
